A common issue in data analysis is to discern between model-driven results and data-driven results. Model driven results is when we produce a curve fit using a parametric equation, based on a relationship between our variables. For this purpose, we assume some knowledge about the underlying process. Data driven result is when we produce a curve fit using a non-parametric equation. The only thing that we have to work with is the data. We don't have any information about the "true" relationship between the variables.

EEPAS and earthquake rupture directivity
I got interested into the following in-press papers.
- Rhoades et al. (2011) test the performance of The Every Earthquake a Precursor According to Scale (EEPAS) model in California and Japan, with promising results for long-range predictability.
- Zaliapin and Ben-Zion (2011) find that strong asymmetric aftershock patterns develop along large faults when large velocity contrasts are present, thus suggesting that the directivity of the earthquake rupture could be conditioned by the fault structure.
Ciao!
Ciao. Buona serata!
Hi! I started this blog because I want something to be read without requiring registration, and because writing on my website is too much hassle - it takes too long to get organized. I wanted a place where to write quickly enough, like a notebook, but still with indexing features. I don't know yet if I will use italian or english, I'll try to use both for a while - maybe I'll find a way to add automatic translation. Have a nice evening!
